Pardon my ignorance, but what for? I remember (Trivia Buffs here's one for ya!) on the show AirWolf, the pilot would drop flares to divert heat seeking missiles from the chopper to the flares. Is this something they might use in a similar manner???

Just wondering, seems like a good idea!

There are such things used for the deterent of SAMs and air-to-air as well. In this case I don't know why maybe just a "Hey look at me I did it", type of thing.

Yeah SAM's and Air-to-Air missles track there targets by heat. so what the flares do is confuse the missle.

He released them for show, more than likely they were returning from deployment.

Yeah flares are for IR heat seeking warheads. They use chaff for RF(radar) seeking missles.
