Default Best 3D graphics software?

I'm something of a Photoshop guru, but have never done 3D modeling / world building. I am in the process of writing a historical sci-fi novel and would like to include pictures of some of the structures / places in the story that no longer exist today. I've seen some pretty cool art that is in line with what I have in mind over on . . .

And it looks like there are a ton of options for software over on this site:

I was wondering what the best software is to create this kind of art. Hoping someone on this forum might have some advice. Thanks.

Luke.

3dsMax is one of the top programs. It was used to model a game called Far cry. Here's a site with some screens of it, and those are all in game shots. The graphics of that game are the best i've seen so far.

That Worldbuilder pro 4 looks insane. I had 3Dsmax for a while till my comp went to hell and it was realtively easy to use, but just like any of those programs you'll have to tinker with it and go through a few tutorials before u can make anything fancy.

What are some of the advantages of these different softwares? I've been looking on the internet and some of the artwork looks pretty decent. Thing is, I could create most of what is being done pretty quickly in Photoshop just by using the internet for some stock pictures, photo books, etc., then mixing and matching until I got something I liked. Also, how are the scenes being created? Do they provide an inventory of (for example) trees, plants, etc. that can be imported and then manipulated to fit a true "3D" environment or do you end up creating a good percentage of the structures yourself?

I guess my question is, how much are these programs like AutoCad ??? (Which is, IMO, a big pain in the *** to use)
