Wow...that was crazy. I would of done the same thing as the officer when he tboned him if someone were shooting at me.
Did anyone catch the gun flying into the air when they slow-moed the video of the crash. You can see the video in the top right of the windshield go flying by.

I wish they had killed him. Looks like they did not try hard enough. Running him over when he was shooting behind the car would have been the best thing to do, as Bad Dog pointed out. Then followed up with a round or two.

Human rights should only be given to those whom are obviously capable of being a proper human, and not to those who choose not to be one.
Like this guy, obviously he knew what he was doing. There's no doubt he knew, you'd have to be dumb, deaf, and blind to not realize that.
So, get rid of him. Don't give him cable tv, magazines, a personal gym, clean clothes daily, and 3 meals a day at the expense of those who are not the ones that did the bad deed. Get rid of him as quickly and as efficient as possible after his sentance has been given.
It's like you have to set off bombs in 10 churches and take out a stadium full of people with a dozen tactical cruise missiles before you get the death penalty....after 20 years of appeals.
Sometimes, this sort of stuff makes me hate how our systems work. Politcal correctness should never override common sense and the obvious.
