Default Tips on getting started with Gimp?
Well i just downloaded gimp so i can mess with pictures and make sigs and such but i am totally clueless on what to do to make a cool sig. Can some one post up some quick basics on how i add a cool background to a car, cut out just the car from a picture, add cool text and some speacial features like blurring and such? Thanks a lot!

I learned by trying all the filters and scripts. Get used to the menu structure and familiar with the tools.

There is a tutorial on the web called "Grokking the Gimp." A friend of mine said it was very useful. I'll try to track down a link.

I also have GIMP and the only thing i know how to do is resize pictures... I tried doing some light photoshoping but the results wer'nt purty...

You want to create a new layer for each item that you would like to segregate. Take a look at the "Layers and Channels" window. e.g. Create a layer and put only the car on it (I tend to create layers with transparency to avoid problems when overlaying). You can select just the car by using the "selection" tool (the one that looks like a box) then cut and paste into the new layer. You will most likely need to trim up some of the areas around the car since it's not always easy to pick a complex shape with millions of colors automatically. There is a tool that selects "contiguous regions" but sometimes it doesn't get it perfect.

Each layer is selected via the "Layers,Channels, Paths" window and can be moved separately from the rest of the image. While working on a layer no other layers are affected. When you are finished, export the image as a jpg, gif, png, etc. which will "flatten" the image.

I still cant figure out how to cut the car itself out. I found some cool backgrounds on google i want to use. Could some walk me step by step of putting my car itself onto a new cool background if you have time? Thanks!

You use the "smart scissors", or whatever, and go around the whole body, when you get all the way back around, connect the dots, then click inside of what you just selected... It should make a solid line all the way around, without the dots... right click in the area you selected then click copy, or cut, open up the background you want, right click then paste. you can move it around with the arrow keys, when you get it where you want go to the "layer" tab and click "anchor layer". Hope that was helpful... It takes a while to figure the stuff out. If you play with it enough you can do all kinds of cool ****.
