Five grand is pretty cheap, in the Rotax Max class to be in the top your gonna spend at least 10 grand on your kart and engine, even our brand new from factory engines get rebuilt before they are driven (by the top builder in the states). Rotax everything stays spec, only Rotax approved techs are allowed to handle your engine, etc... Now 10 grand just for the kart and engine, engine rebuilds every 10-15 hours which cost 1 to 3 grand easily, new tires for every race which is about $180 (and on big race events theres 2 races per weekend, but you also use new tires for qualifying, so 4 sets of tires for the weekend), race entry fees, 98 octane fuel...
You wouldnt believe me if I told you how much some guys spend.
Waiting for the season to start here.

Nice vid bro. What size sprocket it that kid running on the 400EX? I'm all about stunting. Kid's got some pretty good skills on that I have to admit.
I'd have to drop down to a 11t or 12t up front on my 450R to hold them steady like that. As it is now, I'm running a 13t and to creep real slow, you have to be all over the clutch.
I've always wanted a kart. I want something retarded though. 250/500cc would be bad ***.

If you are looking to get into professional karting for real competiton, shifters should not be your first kart... You will notice even though shifter classes are big, theres going to be a group of fast guys up front and the rest are way behind in a group, the guys in that group are guys who though "oh I need a shifter", but the reality is direct-drive and clutch-drive will allow you to focus and work on your corners way better than a shifter. And there are very competitive direct-drive and clutch-drive kart classes.
I see a bunch of "rich" kids who buy karts off that years class champion, only to get lapped by a clutch-drive with less than half the horsepower. These are the type of guys who go extremely slow in turns and then coming into the pits, do a burn out, and thats about all they can do.
For something to just mess around with, yeah go with a shifter, its more fun for just messing around.

I've seen a Honda 500cc in a kart before, and it was bad ***. If I ever buy one, it will be a 250 or 500. You have to have something insane if it's just a toy.
