Default New CNC porting video

We uploaded a new video clip of our CNC porting an Edelbrock LS1 245cc head. It's in black and white but I think it has better contrast this way. Let me know what you think. Clickhere.

that's pretty neat... but i have some questions

How often do you replace that porting bit?

How much fluid does it use in the process?

How much did that machine set you back?

The tooling we use can port over 50 heads before replacing. The tools are coated to help them stay sharper longer.

The coolant is a water based soluble oil. A 5 gallon pale will last us about 6 months. We mix it with water and maintain a certain percentage ratio of water to oil. The coolant is recirculated from a holding tank behind the machine.

A new Fadal 4020 machining center runs about $90 grand new. Used ones can be had for $40-$60 grand. A 5 axis fixture runs about $70 grand. We built our own. Programming software and digitizing equipment will run another $30 grand.

A long download I must say but neat to watch! I've never seen a 5-axis machine before. Those Edelbrock heads are just pathetic! I'm pretty sure my stock heads have larger ports than those. Do you have any flow numbers for those heads yet?

Keep up the good work Richard! BTW, the car is close to running again

Very interesting. I don't know much about that, but neat still.

That's what I love about being a Machinist, you get to watch your work come to life! From being some crapy piece of cast, to a work of art! Alot of people don't know how much knowledge and time it takes to write a program for that kind of work! Very nicely done! Oh and the video was good too.
