At PowerTV we use Final Cut, it's an apple based program. windows Movie Maker works fine if you only want to do some really basic things.

Windows Movie Maker is free and it will work, but it is not something you would want to use if your doing something half way professional.

Vegas has been around for a while, and has a lot of flexibility. I have used this program to do alot of highlight videos, weddings, and various other small projects. To use it's full potential it takes time to learn and play with everything. I have gotten some feedback from some beginners, and they say it is a bit complicated. With some basic skills you can put together some really nice pieces. I am not sure what this will cost you... For some reason I always get a free update .

What about a program to take sections of video out? I have a DVD that was transferred from a VHS tape and there are parts that are FF'd through, also there are parts that have raised levels of sound. It is annoying as crap. I just want to cut them out and redo the DVD.

I think you can cut sections of video with Windows Movie Maker, but can not correct the sound... I never use that program.

With Vegas, you can cut sections very easy, and raise/lower audio levels over a specific point in the video. Also, You can change how fast it gets louder, and this is helpful when you do not want someone to really notice the change in volume.

Those programs look good but I just can't see spending over 100 for a program I'll only use every once in a blue moon
