Tittle says it all. I got some footage from an event that I would like to transfer to the computer but I have no idea of how to do this.

Mini-DV.

I use a firewire as the hardware and Adobe Premiere Pro as the software.

Yeah it has to be formatted into the right type of file to be viewed on the comp via the camera. This could be also viewed with software that came with the camera, or if it a universal format, then windows will know what to do with it.

If you have a tape style camcorder, then you will need a card installed in the computer, that will accept video/audio in.

I have a Sony MiniDV camcorder. I guess all I would need is the software.

I have a Sony Mini-DV too. I use a firewire and Windows Movie Maker to extract video from the camcorder and get the raw footage (.wmv files) and Premier 6.5 if I want to make any compilations or more involved movies.

That sounds like an inexpensive way of doing it. I was thinking of buying Sony's Vegas editing software to fix up video and make it look pretier but raw, unedited video will do

Plus, the .wmv files are a very manageable size (considering the quality) when extracted this way.

fyi, ive got a "high 8" or some crap camcorder. its a 8mm old school mini tape. I bought a kit at best buy that plugs into the usb port. Its a analog to digital converter and is all external. havent used it yet but seems it will work to make dvds out of my old tapes.
