Crackling sound coming from engine when running higher rpm's
I was recently having some fun with a friend and floored it when i was in first gear at around 3,000 rpm but once the rpm's hit 5,000, i started hearing a crackling sound and it sounded like it came from the engine. The engine was already warmed up before i did this. What could this be?

that would be detonation.
might have to back a degree or two off the timing. does it just happen occasionally under a load (flooring it while going uphill)?
what gas do you run? mods? where are you (altitude, temperature)?

Yeah I was flooring it and there was a slight incline. I'm not sure if it happens everytime though since I baby my car. I run 91 octane always, it has 34,000 miles and I live in California in the bay area. The only engine mod done to the car is a K & N air filter.

Have you checked your plug wires. I had a crackling noise at wot I thought it was detonation also. It just didn't pull like it was supposed to. I was checking for vaccum leaks when I saw burn marks on the metal boot of 2 wires and on my header. I knew they were arching. I changed all my wires and problem solved. Hope that helps
