Default gears

i want to put some 3.73 gears on my 98 a4 camaro. jus wondering what kind of trouble i would run into once they are in. a buddy of mine told me that it would throw my speedometer and odometer off, and im expecting worse gas mileage. is there anything else i am missing or any words of caution before i go ahead and purchase these gears?

Everything your friend said is correct. Additionally, your shift points will be off. All these things can be corrected with tuning, except the MPG.

yeah, you really dont need a tune either.. My 3.73s actually made my stall converter lock up quicker which I liked and my mpg didnt change.

Don't know the power you are making but with higher gears there are more teeth on the gears so they can't be set as deep running the risk of breaking your poor ten bolt...

x2 I broke 2 sets of aftermarket gears both 3.42, If you plan on modding the car alot just save for bigger rear.

its true a stronger rear is the BEST choice, but if you dont beat on the car then you can easily get away with the stock ten bolt.
get ahold of jaws gears, sponser here. they have a full bearing gear and lube setup for around 400. best bet if sticking with the 10.

Thats what I used to think too. Cam only with boltons, tires and 3500 stall changed that thinking really quick.

Did you ever blow the stock 10-bolt with stock (3.23 or 2.73) gears though?

I had the same setup as you (3500 stall, cam only, full bolt-ons, BFG and Nitto DRs). I beat the **** out of that rear, never broke cutting 1.6x 60s. But I kept the stock 3.23s.

One of the guys in the club years back went several steps further; 10psi via ATI, H/C, vig3200, plus some bolt-ons. He blew 6 transmissions and 1 engine, but never the stock 3.23 rear, even after two full seasons of racing every weekend. He was running mid-10s on ET Drags, but had a stock suspension and never did better than low 1.7-high 1.6 60s.

Stock 10 bolt w/ stock gears + A4 + no wheel hop = long life from your 10-bolt.

Good Info. and Nope don't think I ever had those gears in long enough to put them to the test. I had 2.73 btw. I probably should have kept them. Gears and loud exhaust make the highway not so fun. I dumped about 800$ into my 10 bolt then figured enough is enough.
