Someone didn't reset the light. But since you just bought it, might as well do your own change and then reset the light.

Which is it?? does the light stay on or does it go out... I would just change it regardless.. but you have to reset your "oil light".. to do so turn key to "ON" position, and push the oil/trip reset button for about 12 sec.. until light flashes then your done..

i've never had mine stay on for longer than about a minute after i start the car. i'd say if the oil looks clean then you'd probably be fine.

Well generally If it's reset when it's changed, it won't come back on till it needs another change. Now if the car has had a recent oil change and the light isn't reset, the light will continue to come on at start up. I prefer the every 3000 miles myself, I don't go off the light. To turn it off, turn the car to "on", but do not start and hold the Trip Reset till the change oil light blinks. Then it won't come back on till the Computer thinks its time, but you can reset this whenever you want. I do it every oil change so that it doesn't come on.

And yes the norm is when the light comes on, it'll stay on for about a minute or so, then turn off. Once reset it will only light during the Gauge check when you turn the key to on.

or if you don't want to reset your trip odometer, turn the key to the run position and push the gas pedal 3 times (i think it's 3)

I've tried the 3 pedal thing on both my Camaro's, didn't work. Does on my Silverado though.

This works on mine too.

As for the whole light thing, I would never leave my oil changes up to that. It supposedly evaluates driving conditions/style etc and bases the frequency for changes off that...I've had 6 or 7 vehicles with this set-up and no two were close to the same (I don't usually think to reset mine at change time). I've had a couple that came on every 6-10,000 miles, and I had one truck that the light only came on twice in the 50,000-plus miles I put on it...and I wasn't exactly taking it easy on the truck.

Just my opinion, but pick a change interval and stick with it. New car, unknown oil change history, just change it now...it's cheap.
