Piston Slap??

Piston Slap?? What is it and how can you tell if its happening.
Im hearing a ticking or popping coming from what seems like the left side of the engine bay. I was told it might be the air pump but would that cause a tapping/clicking sound? i was thinking maybe a plug wire was grounding on something but i couldnt see any sparks last night. Any info would be apreciated.
