Default Clean engine?

Somehow under the hood sitting through winter, sand accumulated in all the little crevices of the engine. I was just curious how you all get this out? I cant get a screw driver and a towel to clean it out b/c then it just falls deeper into the engine bay. So how do you guys do it? Can i spray it out w/ water as long as my intake and everything is closed up? Or would it be better to use an air compressor to blow out the sand. I was thinking water first b/c air sounds like the sand can scratch. What do you think?

I would use water or a air compressor/can of compressed air (if you don't have a compressor)
