Default T56 Question

Ok, went to the track for the first time last night with my M6. Everything was fine until my last run(of course) and I missed 4th. Don't know what I shifted into but it wasn't 4th. It killed the engine so I ended up coasting to the end of the track. Down there it took a couple seconds for my engine to start back up, which isn't normal, so I was kinda scared. But it started fine, and now it runs perfectly fine. The engine is fine there aren't any strange noises coming from anything.
BUT, my shifter actually takes effort to move between the gears now. Before I could pretty much just slip my shifter into gear but now I have to put a fair amount of effort into it. When I'm actually driving it's a bit easier but if I just sit in the driveway trying to flip it between gears it's rather hard. I can GET it into gear it just seems as if the paths to the gears have been screwed up? I just have to shove/jimmy the shifter a bit more now. If I try and put it into 5th, 6th, or reverse it's almost impossible from a stop. The reverse one is really annoying because that's obviously the only time I would shift to reverse is from a stop.
Any thoughts on what the problem could be, and what I could have damaged? I can still drive it so I think I'm just gonna take it easy for a bit and see if it gets any better. Take it to a friend of mine at the dealer to get it looked at. Could I have bent some shift forks? would that be it? I think it would make sense if I was having problems shifting into 4th but not sure why all the gears are hard now.
I'm praying it's not something to bad because like I said it was my first time ever to the track and I really hope I didn't break something major the first time out. Any input would be great.

There are these small tabs called "dogs" that are located on the slider rings inside the tranny. They are only held on by some weak looking C-clips. When you jammed that tranny into the wrong gear at high speed, you could have dislodged those dogs, which could be out of place. That happened to me once, and it acted exactly as you describe. I continued to drive the car and the tranny got stiffer and stiffer, eventually preventing me from shifting gears. So, it was stuck in 2nd gear and I was able to creep it to the shop to get it repaired.

Bent forks tend to make the tranny pop out of gear, but do not make shifting stiffer. If your tranny is grinding between gears, the synchros are shot.

So how much did it cost for you to get it repaired? And would this maybe be a good time to just look into a nwe shifter. Would a better shifter prevent this from happening again or is it gonna happen no matter what if I throw it in the wrong gear.

rebuild on a T56 is typically in the $750-800 range, including all parts. Aftermarket shifters are more precise, but if you throw it into the wrong gear that is driver error, not mechanical error. Learn proper hand positions and shifting is much more fluid.

1-2 hand in "pistol grip" with thumb upwards
2-3 palm facing downwards, pushing with meat under thumb area on palm
3-4 elbow up (not next to your side), palm down, pushing shifter back with fingers. Thumb pointed towards driver's door.

Most mis-shifts are from using a pistol grip for each shift, the most common is the 3-2 mis-shift. This is typically due to having your elbow next to your side, and using a pistol grip. This puts components of force towards 2nd gear instead of 4th. If you change your hand positions, you eliminate the components of force in the wrong directions.

Hey, I'm thinking this is what I did. I did it accidentally in traffic a day or so after the track so I realized what I probably did. Needless to say since then I've been forcing myself to switch hand positions before the 3-4 shift, that way it becomes habit. And my tranny is healthy now. Don't know what it was but after a day or so everything is back to normal.

hand position is ALOT of what causes these misshifts,
the only differance in my technic from nine ***** is that on the 3-4 shift i turn my hand palm facing the passanger door and thumb down, in this position it is almost impossable to hit 2nd, the only miss you could have is hitting 6th, and this wont hurt anything.
get your tranny rebuilt and while their at it have them throw in a steel shift fork for 3-4 (most common bent one)
