Hello every body
just rebuild and engine and i was wondering which generation was? Can anyone tell from the numbers on the cylinder head? I tried uploading photos but for some reason they wont

Some say yes some say no... the GM truck engines were all built with the same design as the LS1. LS1,LS6, etc. are just RPO codes GM used to identify what engine was to be installed in a vehicle.

You can say it's an LS type engine in the same way you can say all the small blocks from '55 to the mid '90s are sbc. LS1/2/3 are aluminum blocks. There's a truck 5.3 that was aluminum (L33) but it was a very limited run and hard to come by. If it's an iron block you probably have a LR4 or LM7 depending on if it's 4.8 or 5.3. Knowing exactly what you have is essential when ordering parts or trying to find the right price if you sell it. Best bet is to look at the front of the block just below the drivers side head and see what number is stamped there. That tells you the displacement.

the front of the block usually has 4.8l and 5.3l cast into it as bammax stated. You might have to look through a spark plug hole to see if the piston is flat or is dished to discern which engine you have. The 4.8l has flat pistons.
