speedometer problem

speedometer problem my car all of a sudden has a problem where the speedometer is delayed and slow. I have a 98 trans am a4. when i start to speed up from a stop the needle goes up very slowly and has about a 2 second delay. then when i stop it does the same thing. i took it into a shop and they said its either the gauge cluster or the speedo sensor. whats do you guys think and what should i try? also if it is the speedo then wouldnt my "check gauge" light go on?

whats more likely to fail....my speedo gauge for the speedo sensor? my two options are to replace the whole gauge unit and hopefully it wou;d fix the problem if it was a broken speedo, or i can have the speedo sensor replaced
