The 1999 TransAm I just purchased seems to be listed as a Firebird Formula in almost every system that I enter the VIN in. My insurance company, my lien holder, etc. It isn't that big of a deal, but I thought the Fomulas had the V6 body and spoiler? My car literally says TransAm on the door, has the TransAm spoiler etc. I can't imagine the previous owner would go through the trouble of replacing the rear hatch AND DOORS instead of just buying a TransAm. Are computer systems just stupid?

Nothing about the VIN number itself will specify if the car is a Trans Am or a Formula. All that these VIN decoders can tell is that it's a V8 Firebird (i.e. Formula). The Trans Am package is specified within the SPID under RPO Y82, but the VIN number is too generic to contain this sort of detailed trim package information (similarly, the VIN itself also does not specific whether the car is a WS6, SS, Firehawk).
