Question about spark timing and knock
So, in this new 1999 TransAm I bought that is mostly stock (117,000 miles A4, just has an SLP air lid and some suspension upgrades) my spark advance is at like 32-38* at most RPM. (ACCORDING TO TORQUE APP.) One of my knock sensors is throwing a code (I'm going to replace both soon.) Our 1998 WS6 @ 80,000 miles A4 was a lot faster than this new TransAm, as it had full exhaust, FAST 92mm LSx Intake and Throttle Body, more weight reduction, and 3.73 rear gears. I don't ever remember seeing it go above 28* or 30*. Factory tune on BOTH cars, to my knowledge. Where the longtube headers on our 1998 WS6 causing false knock readings that were causing it to retard? And besides, isn't 28* or so kind of optimal for this engine? The WS6 ran strong, I was absolutely punking SRT-8 Challengers, and going neck and neck with the Coyotes, even walking one when the driver fucked up his shift (the kind that first came out, not 2018+) This stock (+lid) TransAm is obviously not as fast on my "butt dyno" as our WS6, but she still feels solid when I get the tires to hook up, but why is the spark advance so different? Is 38* too high? I use nothing but 93 octane for the last 5 years on either car.
