Default general question on rust

my friend just bought an 02 civic and her dad wants me to look at it since he says there are some rusty bolts under the hood. he said its from new jersey near the coast. he said there isnt rust on the body or frame, but he's concerned with the rusted bolts. this sounds pretty normal to me, but when i go look at it, what should i keep my eye out for?

tell him half the engine rusted away, being an 02 i dont think there would be much rust to be concerned about, as long as there isnt rust holes, dont worry, bolts are usually the first things that rust up, if hes worried, tell him to take them out and put new bolts in, but rusty bolts would be the last of my concerns

You could always wire brush them and use a rust to primer spray. One Step makes spray. But if its only surface stuff I wouldn't worry about it.

thats exactly what i told him to do. he said that there is also a "film" on certain engine parts such as the alternator. i wont be going to look at it until later this afternoon, but i would expect that to be from the atmosphere as well(coast car).
