the other main issue with 98s only would affect u if u go forced induction. the 98 computer is unable to accept a 2 or 3 bar MAP due to a different computer. and if u blow a motor due to the oiling issue, then u could build a 408 LS2 to replace it

Nothing wrong with my '98. I've also had a '99 and a '00, and many friends with '01/'02. I'm actually happiest with the '98, it has no piston slap and no oil burning, plus bigger injectors than '99/'00, better flexplate than '01/'02, less/no issues with torque management, and a working temp gage. Only thing I miss is the plastic fuel tank from the '99-up cars.

I have a 98 M6 T/A, just hit 60,000 miles, and everything is good, but I'm getting ready to rebuild the Tranny, and install a new clutch. I'm going to get a diff. oil pump when I install the FM-13.

I had the stock oil pump for about 85k miles with bolt-ons. Then for about 5-10k miles with the cam in my sig. Then I swapped out the timing chain and the pump for a double roller and a ported one. My car burns ZERO oil. Now has almost 105,000 miles on it. The only problems I am having right now are electrical and I don't know what's the deal with that. The only thing I can think of that is "bad" is the pcm on these cars. There are a few things you cannot do with them that you can with the newer ones. Such as a speed density tune.

The only problems I've had with my car in the 3 years I've owned it is:

A/C Compressor went out
Bank 2 Knock Sensor replaced
Ignition Lock Cylinder replaced

Car just turned 79k.

Popped the motor in my 98 due to oiling issues, spun the bearings....wasnt pretty. I've heard mixed stories on these cars....i really believe that most of them are fine....I just happened to get a bad egg....mine was an auto, completely stock with the exception of a catback when i got it, i was racing a buddy of mine about 5 times...never had it over 5800rpm redline....so i know i wasnt revving it too high.

Pretty much if you have a 98 then you probably have a decent amount of miles on it which probably mean you didn't really pay a lot for it. So the cure to fixing a 98 and it's problems is to get a nice cam and a good oil pump and timing chain. with all of the money you saved on buying a 98.

Well I am well on my way to doing that, I picked up an LS6 cam today (the 02+ model) and I will be putting in an ls6 oil pump and a new timing chain along with the cam/springs/pushrods. Any reason not to get the double roller timing chain for an extra ten bucks? thanks - Darren

...And just for any doubters, a quick trivia piece:

Did you know that the highest dynoing, naturally aspirated, stock cube LS1 is a 1998 Camaro?

Sure, stock cubes...what's NOT stock?

I'm on my 4th block right now. 1st one died as a result of a broken valvespring in my aftermarket heads, 2nd one from hydralock, and 3rd one from a spun bearing. The spun bearing was a result of not realizing my oil level was too low while racing. I drove home 40 miles from the event, and I only noticed something odd in the last 2-3 miles. It died on me about 1/8mi from my parking lot - I was able to let it coast the rest of the way.

That's a good idea. If I were you I would just get an ls2 timing chain. They are pretty strong, very cheap, and all you will need and more. A double chain for you is overkill, and if you think about it you probably lose a very small amount of power due to the extra rotating weight of the double chain. I'd get some comp 918 springs as well, if that wasn't what you were thinking in the first place.

You think I would be better off with some Comp 918's than just getting LS6 springs? I was leaning toward ls6 springs because they last so long, I know that supposedly aftermarket springs have to be replaced often? Plus the LS6 are cheaper
