Default difference in LS1 years

ok gotta question did a lil research and i cant seem to find anyhting. I am wondering what the diff is between 97-02 LS1s as for my project im finding 98-99 LS1s pretty cheap and i am wondering if the power difference is in the computer, or the heads comrpression or whatever else. Can u make the power of an 98 or so LS1 with a computer upgrade, chances are that ill be running megasquirt so would that over come the power difference, "ie tuning". Just wnating to know the difference betweent the years thanks alot guys.

Can't find anything? Did you check the stickies at the top of this forum?

This is what you want:

No problem.

Keep in mind if you're buying a complete motor the '01+ motors will have the LS6 intake.

I won't be suprised if someone chimes in and says that all 98 Camaros/trans ams had a bad oil pump. But that's just not a proven fact as there are so many 98's that haven't a problem with that. Just throwing that in there for you.

the earlier ls1's had larger cam and egr, NO ls6 intake.
the later ls1's had smaller cam, NO egr, and a ls6 intake.

that's all i got.

yup most people will say stay away from the 98's. Harder to tune, weak oil pump etc.. i peronally seen a 98 with 187k on it and it ran great! Here is another even higher mileage

I'd buy that car today if I had the money. High mileage cars don't scare me a bit.

I hope you guys are aware that the '98-'00 LS1 all had the same exact oil pump. The revised one didn't come out till '01.

A '99 or '00 car has just as much risk of random pump failure as a '98 car.

Actually, the only guys I've known to have pump failure have been '99 owners.

Mid-year 00 cars got the new pump - 241 heads are a good indicator that it has it.

I have a 98 and have no problems with the oil pump yet. I have 135k miles on it she does not leak any oil or have the piston slap some of the others ls1 cars have.

98-00 had worse lifters, worse rod bolts, worse oil pumps, and no chance of an LS6 block, as well as an LS1 instead of an LS6 intake. The 98 can only be honed .05 and the 99+ can go .010 (I am very sleepy, there may be another 0 in front of those #'s).

The 01+ got a smaller cam, bigger injectors, LS6 intake, LS6 clutch and hydrolics.

99+ IIRC got a Torsen differential and hte 98's had the Auburn

98 had the only usable gas tank cap tether and the only guages that really registered anything (temp, ect, I think that was ended with the 99' production and now we get "dummy guages" on the temp).

98-00 had different exhaust manifolds

01-02 got pup-cats and deleted the EGR

the 4L60E had weak sun gears in 00 from what I heard

Some people say the 01+trannies have carbon-fiber syncros, others deny this

The 02 cars got a napier faced oil ring and are less likely to use oil overall.

I am sure I could go on, but I think I got the major ones.
