Default which one first

i am finally going to start moding my car little at a time of course(99z28 a4 273s). but i was wondering which to do first. 3600 stall or i am thinking 373 or 410 gears. the only mods on my car is msd wires 2.5in. y pipe no cats. o2 sensors are not on. when car was stock best time was a 13.60@106 and i think it was a 2.2, 2.3 or so 60'. which will benefit me most first. future plans are all basic bolt ons + a 228 or 230 cam. any suggestions thanks

alot of guys are going with 3.73 gears for thier auto's and with that cam a 3600 stall sound about right. i would do gears first because with a 3600 stall and 2.73's if you launch with that combo your going to have alot of wheelspin.

There will be even more wheel spin with 3.73s and a 3600 stall. Either way, stock tires will be hating life with either gears and a 3600 stall.

What 3600 stall TC are you looking at? A Vig (PI)? If so, their 3600 stall speed actually stalls to more like 4000+ on an LS1. That will feel very loose in around town driving situations with the stock 2.73 gears. You might want to consider a lower stall if you plan to keep those gears.

If you want to go with gears first, in most cases 3.73 would be a better choice for the A4 trans than 4.10.

Default gears

if your lookin forv alot more grunt down low do the gears.i went with 3.73s and at 65 its wound a little more than id like.in my opinion 4.10s will be too low.i have major traction issues with the gear alone.i agree that the3600 would be a little loose also.

i have some m/t et streets for the track.my car is 90% city driven except when i go to the local track which is about 20mi. i drive to and from work only(city) which is 10 to 12 mi round trip, the other driving is with wife's ride. how would my rearend hold up with the 373 gears and 3600 stall. is it worth getting a posi unit or just getting the 12 bolt. i do not plan to race it a lot nor do i drive my car hard. i just want it to be able to defend itslef when it needs to. sorry for all the ?'s i know they have been all asked about 100 times before. just trying to get back in the game.

I would suggest first get full intake and exhaust. You want your engine to better breathe.

Next would be drivetrain upgrades, a Vig 3200 and trans cooler, and some sticky tires. Your rear should be fine because you are not shocking it launching with an automatic, you are pre-loading it and launching that way.

You can get gears if you want to, 3.73 are the shortest gear you want to go with an automatic unless you are bracket racing, which you aren't.

i would get the gears and stall first. its going to give you the most noticable gain compared to bolt-ons.

STALL

And it will pretty much eliminate the need for gears, there are guys in the 10's with 2.73's.

Wait until you do a cam or swap to a 12 bolt then do gears.

i dont know about you but if i had 2.73 gears and i dumped my clutch at 3600rpm my tires would be spinning faster than if i had 3.73. tires also wouldnt be spinning as long because they would be spinning slower. shorter gears get you off the line faster

+1 for the stall before anything.

it will make the biggest gain - and you'll still get great mileage with the stock gears w/ the converter locked on long trips.
