Are you asking in regards to '93+ Trans Ams?
If so, the 2nd digit in the VIN will ALWAYS be a "G". Whether it's a Trans Am or not. The 2nd digit has nothing to do with model or trim level.

I wasn't aware the year played a hand in this. I was asking a friend how you would be able to tell the difference between a T/A and a Formula and he said that in order to tell if it is an original T/A the second letter in the VIN would be a w. So the second letter has absolutely nothing to do with it???

yeah the second digit always denotes the manufacturer, the first is the coutry it was man/assembled in. could be correct on the "w" being a TA(from early 90s), dependin on the year the letter may change, but its placement in the vin stays the same

Of course, you can change all those things on the formula if you want to, but not many people do that since the T/A is not really of a greater value than a formula, unless it's a ws6 T/A. That does increase the price some usually, and to tell that you can look at the rpo sticker.

I beleive it was in 1981 or 1982 when the structure of the VIN number changed. For all modern GM cars, that second digit will always be a "G". You might be correct on the "W" thing if you go back to the '60s/'70s or something.

Ok all of that was really helpful. I knew about the T/A having the lettering on the back panel but as you said people change that! Cool well now I can tell the person who told me that the second letter in the vin was W that he is stupid hahaha.
