Diff Overhaul?

Diff Overhaul? I took my 99 Z28 into the dealer recently to have some work done. (Big Mistake) . Anyway, they replaced the throw out bearing, clutch, flywheel, and a few other things that cost me a fortune. So the guy gives me back my car and says it needs a differential overhaul. Said it would cost $1700. So then I said well sir, I can just buy a brand new auburn gear diff for $400 and make a day of it with a buddie and some beers, instead of doing that. He said no, I don't need to replace the housing, the internals just need to be replaced. Is he f*cking with me ? When he said "overhaul", what exactly does that mean? Can't I just buy a new diff? I want to put some 3.73's in it anyway. Thanks for your help.

It could just mean that he wants to pull **** apart and bolt **** back together. I would ask him.
1. what needs to be overhauled.
2. what parts will you be buying
3. what made you come to this conclusion
4. tell him you want to inspect the old parts if you do end up doing it.
you never know with a dealership. I would ask for more information shoot man for all we know every thing could be just fine. he may figure hey this guys got some money i am gonna get some more out of him. on the other hand something may be wrong.
just ask the dude as many questions as you can come up with
