funny idle?

funny idle? so im driving down the street today and a new mustang comes up behind me. im doin 45 maybe 50 mph in 5th so i drop it into 2nd and punch it and shift back into third you know just to taunt him 
so he follows and we go down the street then i catch a light so i stop and the idle drops below 500 usualy 750 of course and i had to rev it to keep it runnin needless to say didn't want to race the mustang in this condition 
. so is this hydraulic lifter pump up and my valves just weren't closing? or something else? any ideas??
