Default nitrous build, best piston & bottom end combo?

guys, im new to this nitrous stuff, and i dont know alot about it, but id like to try it and hopefully with your guys help learn a little about it. i have a 98 firebird with a ms4 cam, stock heads, ls6 intake, longtubes, blah blah blah. basically id like to build a somewhat budget bottom end that i can spray the **** out of safely. id like to do like a 200-250 shot. if possible id like to stick with a stock crank and just use a good set of rods & good piston combo, arp everything in the lower end. any reccomendations?

Its going to be all about your pistons, pins and rings. Wiseco custom forged nitrous pistons w/ lateral gas ports, NPR stainless chrome rings (for high heat applications) and tool steel pins. Also a set of head studs and a good set of cometic head gaskets. Also get your piston tops coated, this helps with heat. This is def overkill for a 200-250 shot though, I sprayed a 250 dry through my stock shortblock for over a year untill I decided to tear it down and it was fine, one of the bearings did show significant wear but it was a car making 667 RWHP for a year and I ran it hard everywhere I drove it. As for rods Lunati Pro mods would be fine. I think 300+ with supporting fuel tune etc. would be realistic with that kind of set-up. After that the only thing youll have to be worried about is pushing water (lifting the heads) anything else just ask.

If the most you want to spray is a 200-250 you should be fine with most any combo. Multiple stock shortblocks have taken that before (though I wouldn't advise it). Stock crank, stock replacement H-beams with ARP bolts, and pistons from any number of manufacturers should be fine. Diamond, Mahle, Wiseco, JE, CP, Ross, etc....all good stuff

Don't coat the tops of the pistons unless you are gonna coat the combustion chambers too.

It's less about the name brand of the parts and more about the builder and what they like and trust. find out who you want to build the motor then talk to them opn what they have used and like. We use Eric at HK. He has built a ton of nitrous motors and his prices are excelent. He has built us everything from stock crank short blocks to purpose built 500 shot 408's . including mine and ATv's motors.

what do ya'll recommend as far as flat top/dome/dish...what is the best setup for nitrous as far as that goes...I'm looking at building a Iron 402 and running a lot of bottle and just wanted some opinions on specific pistons. I too am new to the nitrous scene and would like to do all my homework and research before i start ordering parts.

also on the rings, which would be better...the plasma top/napier 2nd or the steal top/napier 2nd..or is there another set thats better suited for nitrous apps?

thanks

Flat or Dome dish is for FI. You dont need low compression with nitrous.

yea i know you run a lower compression with Boost..reason it seems like im asking dumb questions is that i've built a lot of motors myself..however this one will be my first LS build and my first nitrous motor so i don't want to jack anything up. What is the ideal compression ratio to run with nitrous, i've seen some running 11.5:1...

I'm not expert but I wouldn't go with anything over 11.5:1 just for the shear fact that you still want to run it on pump gas, right?

People are running pump gas at 12:1 but you have to see what will be acceptable for your application. The cam also makes a difference with how high compression you can go while still running pump gas. I would speak with a reputable engine buidlder and ask them to get an exact number with your specs.

We use a weisco nitrous piston that eric@hke designed and they take a ton of abuse. call a good engine builder( we recomend Eric) They can give you prices and availability. Most of the piston companies have good stuff but its the location of the iportant things that ill dictate how it likes the nitrous.
