Sending unit wires

The three wires that come off of the sending units or should say plug into the sending units from the nitrous pressure and fuel pressure autometer guages.The purple, black, and grey wires.

So I guess if I am getting less than 1 volt on the purple I have a bad sending unit? What I find funny is that the guage will power up without the 3 sending unit wires connected but as soon as I connect them the guage won't move, like I have a bad guage. Why would this happen? But the guage is putting out 4.87V when I test the grey and black wires.
If you are using the gauge the gauge steps down the voltage so you are ok (unless you put 12 v to the sending unit directly...)
The purple wire is the variable voltage and should go up or down (0-5v) with the presssure (fuel or bottle).
Shoot autometer an email through there tech support, if it's new they will likely replace the sending units, of it's used you can buy just the sending units from summit racing.
