Question Modified MSD Window Switch Question

Do you still need to cut the wire loops to put the switch in 4 cyl. mode on a switch that has been modified to 5V square wave?

Thanks, Ken

Why are you putting it in 4cyl mode? Or is it not on a LS1?

The LS1 uses a signal like 4 cyl cars, thus the need for 4 cyl mode even after they modify it for a 5 volt square signal.

Has anyone found out yet EXACTLY what is done by MSD to "modify" the switch?

That would save some people $35 and the hassle of sending it back.

I believe they convert it to read a 5V square input signal. I think most other ignition systems are 12V and that is what the MSD is set to read. IMO.

I know supposedly "what" they do, I am curious HOW they achieve it.

Most people just cut the two loops and call it good. I didnt send mine back and it works fine. I know many others that have not sent them in and they work fine.

A lot of people have had luck with it working without sending it back, then again there are a few out there that have had to send it back before it would work on their cars. It is hit or miss.

I bet you would have a hard time getting that type of information out of MSD.

They will tell you that if you don't have it converted, it will burn out that pin on your computer. They will convert it for free! Why not do it?

It's $35 to have it converted. The "burning out the pin" is a myth.

First they told me I had to do it, not to burn out the pin. Then they did it for FREE. Why would they tell me to do it if it didn't need to be done? Second why would you pay to have a part that is sold to work on your application that needs to be modified? I didn't! Good luck.

The pin thing is bullshit, and I've never heard of anyone getting it recalibrated for free. Your lucky if you did.

Let me make sure iI understand this. If you buy a part for your car from a major company. The part you buy that is suppose to work without modifications and it doesn't???? Second of all, I'm the reason they know how to fix THERE problem. I was the first one to try to use it and put there r+d dept to work. Just try to use there original instructions!!!***&&&##@$ So I would say no to the extra money thing! How can you guys not understand that! jt093 are you a MSD tech? Good luck. Andy

I bought the modified switch from Tom Byrne because I knew it would work and not fry my computer. Is it right that MSD does this to us? No! But I didn't want to take the chance of having a problem. This is just another case of the LS1 enthusiast getting screwed (i.e. $3000 heads and $2100 crankshafts). But thanks for the help guys, I cut the 2 loops and the switch works great.

I've never heard of anyone having their computer fried. The only issue I have seen is that it does not work for some people, so they send it into MSD for recalibration. Some people have this problem but many DO NOT.
