Are any lt1 guys using their Msd opti to retard timing? I'm cammed with bolt ons and have walbro in tank and 30lb injectors. I am installing a Hsw single wet shot. I'm probably going to do a 125 shot. In the past I've never messed with timing and never had problems with detonation running a 100 shot. It seems that adjusting the timing yields the best results so I'm trying to figure out which way I want to go. I want to know who has used their msd opti to retard the timing. The msd is apparently adjustable +/- 7*. So I will either use my opti or I will go with a msd digital 6 or mallory ignition box. Just don't want to buy the box if I can just use my opti to take care of the timing. |
I would buy the mallory 685 box. I believe you can find it for around $250 and that way when you are running on motor you still have full timing. Then when you flip the switch to arm the nitrous it will pull out however much timing you want (I think up to 15* in .2 increments) |

Ha that's right. I forgot it sold again quickly. |

doesnt' msd still make a dash mounted switch that will retard timing??? kinda like a knob with increments of 1* all the way to like 20*???? I know they used to cause my buddy had one on his mustang.... seems like the easiest solution. Or buy a digital 7 box and you can do it internal to the box. Not sure about MSD 6 series ignitions though... |
MSD Digital 6+ has built in rev limiter, 2-step and timing adjustments |

I love my Digital 7....... wouldn't trade it for the world.... 2 step also doesn't sound like the engine is gonna blow up when i'm on it either... :D |
I love the sound of my car on the 2-step. Sounds like a race car!! lol |
That adjustment is more to dial in cam phasing then any thing else for when you degree a cam ;) |
We use a Digital 6al for my buddies 358 LT1 Impala. It works great and is very easy to adjust timing for the jug! We have the 2step rev limiter wired into the line lock for burnout control so we don't over rev the engine doing a burnout. Works pretty nice! |

YES...better choice then the Mallory. I went through 2 of them in a year and 1 bad out of the box for a customer car. another vote for the Digital 6 here.....have had one on my car since 2001 |

programmable 6al-2 here... kinda spendy but it kinda bridges the gap between the 7 and 6 series boxes. |
