I just read the instructions again.
The TAN/LIGHTBROWN and GREY wires output a ground when the controller tells the relay/relays to go active. You connect the GREY wire if you are hooking it up to activate a second stage.

I just have the grey wire free hanging and everything works fine.

It felt like my system was working fine? I just ran the black and gray together and ran them both to the negative side of the battery.. I think i read it correctly, see wiring: page 1.
