Many of us are stock long blocks minus the cam shaft of course and we're running .50s or better in the 1/8 on 1/4 mile tune-ups. The stock motor will hold, you must have the supporting mods such as tranny, converter, suspension etc... You would need these parts anyway whether you went built motor or stock.

For the money I would just buy a TA with a forged motor there are some good deals out there. Like stated about to get into the 6.50 range you could do a heads cam ls1 with a plate nitrous kit and you would be there.
I built a forged 370 that ran 6.1 in the 1/8th has a ms3 cam patriot stage 3 heads and nitrous nozzle kit with a 175 shot. But also have a Performa built lv2 4l60e and a tci billet stall for nitrous. You have to at least get shocks and some suspension so dont forget that.
