Default 317 LQ4 and 228R

I'm sure this question is asked a million times as to what heads and cam will be good with nitrious, but mine is a little different. I have an 04 GTO with an LS1 and 6 speed. I was planning a higher compression cam and heads build. After doing some research I ended up with a Comp 228r, LS7 lifters, new pushrods and springs and a set of worked LS6 heads on the way.

Well, a good friend of mine has a set of stock 317 LQ4 heads he's offering me for $200. Now this got me thinking, hmmm, bigger combustion chamber, less compression, I could run some nitrous on this thing and really have some fun. What do you guys think about the 228r cam with spray? Specs are 228/228 .588/.588 110lsa

Car is mainly street drivin, but it's hard street drivin haha. It sees the strip about a dozen times a year.

Are you wanting a different cam?

The valve events that cam has aren't tailored for nitrous, that's an all-motor cam.

I would mill the heads to bring the compression up around 10.5:1 at least and find another cam if you can swing it.

I have always been under the belief that nitrous likes higher compression. My new motor is 12.5-1. I would stick with the LS6 heads and maybe even have them milled down some to get the higher compression. I would recommend at least a 11.0-1 ratio if not higher. As far as the cam, You want a longer exhaust duration then the intake. Most of the online shops offer nitrous cams or can spec one out for you if you call and talk to them. Matching the heads and cam together is important if you want to make more power.

What RPM do you want to turn it to?

What rear gear? What intake manifold?

How much do you want to spray? 1/4 mile or 1/8th mile and what is the weight of the car and tire size used?

If you use the 317's and leave the compression the way it is the cam will need to be tailored so it doesn't end up with a really low DCR. Having the low SCR and putting a big camshaft in will kill any and every bit of compression it had to begin with.

I would use the LS6 heads it already has, you can mill them if you want also.

I would want something like 228/236 114+5. This cam won't be a dog off the bottle and should respond very nicely to anything up to 250rwhp worth of nitrous.

idk anything about those heads but I have a forged ls1 with 241 heads (stock) and ls1 intake, with a tsp228r cam, the pistons are high compression with valve relief (not sure specs though)
I hit my car with. 100 shot and it was breaking up bad and running way rich (turns out my base tune was super rich in the first place)
even though it ran badly on the street on the 100 shot I ran side by side with a 515whp 03 cobra.
my car was trapping 89mph in the 1/8th so I can only assume I picked up at least 10mph to run with that cobra..
not sure If my car will gain much more than 10-12mph with nitrous on my stock heads intake and that cam but I'm hoping to find out in a few weeks when I straighten out the tune and whatnot..

Thanks for the input guys. I'm just gonna go with the worked LS6 heads and leave the nitrous to you nuts!
