Melted BR7EF's *VIDEO*

3 Attachment(s)
Took the car to the track for the first time on the bigger shot. Melted 2 plugs on the first pass. In the video you can see the car spit out 3 small pieces of glowing hot metal which I assume is the ground straps of #5 and #8 plugs. Compression and leak down test came back OK so thankfully I dont think I hurt the motor. Question is what do you guys think was wrong with my tune-up / setup?

408ci
13:1 Compression
Carb'd
E85
28* on motor
13* on spray
28N 28F direct port (250hp)
950psi N2O
6psi Fuel
NGK BR7EF
11.8-12.0AFR's on spray

IMO - 7's are a tad warm for 250. I'd be looking at 8's or possibly 9's.

Did you verify the timing was pulled?

brandon@nitrousoutlet Jul 17, 2013 09:00 AM

Yeah the 7's were the wrong plug choice there. Go with 9's!

Yes the timing is pulled when the nitrous arming switch is activated. Flip the switch, car runs like shit on motor=timing pulled.

You guys think plug choice could cause this by itself?

13:1 408 plus a 28 jet. Yes sir! I would of started at a 9

89L98T56 Jul 17, 2013 12:06 PM

Alright then I guess I'll throw 9's at it and leave everything else alone.

Dynospeed Jul 17, 2013 01:07 PM

Are you getting any oil in the combustion chamber? I don't have e85 experience so I can't comment on that. But I do feel you need -9 also.

Once you swap plugs be sure to read them because you may be able to put some timing back in it. I figured you had so much timing out to combat the heat from the plug?

Yea it looks like the timing mark is well above the bend to me. OP compression like you have generates a lot more cylinder pressure = heat and then you add nitrous to the mix= more cylinder pressure & heat than a lower compression motor so it requires an even colder plug.

Carter01 Jul 17, 2013 04:50 PM

Personally i would run 7s on motor in that car and 10s on 250. Everyone has there own twist to tuning but your plugs are extremely hot for that combo.

Nitro Dave's Nitrous Outlet Jul 17, 2013 05:15 PM

Plugs are to hot..

Those plugs are nasty but take some brake clean and see if you can wash the black off the smooth base of the plug.

Also did you upgrade the pistons in those fuel solenoids to work with E85?

Dave

Not much if any. This motor does have some blow-by but it has since the initial fire. No smoke out the exhaust so I chalked it up to the .034" end gaps.

I pulled all the timing the MSD 6010 would let me (15*) just to be safe for the first hit on the 250. I didn't even think about plug choice. I have made over 950rwhp with boost and E85 on BR7's with no issues before. I didn't do my research this time around, I fucked up, that's why I am here lol.

Thanks for the info man.

7s ran great on motor. No problems even with a 100 hit. Didnt even snap about changing plugs for a bigger hit.

What am I looking for on the base of the plug?

I had no idea the pistons needed an upgrade for E85, tell me more.

Justins00ss Jul 17, 2013 07:53 PM

I am guessing like most things E85 related those pistons in the noids can deteriorate over time when they come in contact with E85. Kinda like it does to older rubber fuel line. Just my .02

I would run #10 plug
Make shorter hits 400' then 1/8th .. so on.
Work your way up looking at plugs the whole time.

dcam503 Jul 18, 2013 02:01 PM

holy crap, that thing is a beast!

NGK doesnt make a non projected, tapered seat #10.

Guys is his A/F correct given that he is using E85? Doesn't E85 have a stoich of 9 or something like that.

I am about to switch to E85 so I can up the shot from 250 and it's only $3 a gallon here compared to $9 for race gas.

Had it on the dyno and that is where it made the most power.

His A/F looks to be right on.

Thats dumb!
Well get some heads that use gasket seat then. LOL!!

#9 will work just have to keep timing low.
