Default Avoiding Nitrous Backfire

Hi, nitrous newbie here. I am going to be doing a few test hits this weekend and wanted to discuss nitrous backfires... Why do they occur and how are they avoided? I have a ported fast 92 and I'd like to keep it from blowing up. Below is my setup. Let me know your thoughts please!

Nitrous Outlet 92mm Plate Kit
Nitrous Outlet Dedicated Fuel Cell - C16
Nitrous Outlet Purge
Nitrous Outlet Win Max - WOT Spray Window 3000-6000 rpm.
Nitrous Outlet Heater, Opener, Bottle Etc.
Nitrous Outlet fuel pressure sensor - Wired to solenoid relay to kill on low pressure.
Lingenfelter LNC-2000
Innovate PSN-1 - Wired to N20 sensor to kill on low press. Also wired to wideband to kill on lean.
BR7EF Plugs .030

Planning on pulling 2 degrees and starting with a 50 shot and working up to 100. I plan to monitor AFR and then once dialed in, I'll work on timing and reading plugs. Once dialed in at 100, I'll work up to 200. Reading plugs along the way.

I am also interested in hearing any general advice anyone can offer to a guy doing his first test hits.

Thanks!

I don't usually copy and paste but this was posted on another forum. I'm not a nitrous guy so I think I would call someone at Nitrous Outlet or NOS and ask them the best way to avoid it.

That is where the big genie comes from, fuel. On a clutch car, set the switch wrong, bog the motor with the spray on, you get a pop. Some auto cars do this when a bunch of timing is taken out and the rotor phase is wrong. Or it could be that the fuel solenoids come on and you get no nitrous for whatever reason. VERY seldom is it lean. If it was that lean, where does that big ball of fire come from??

The down track genie can be worse. That is usually the result from a burned piston and the combustion process happens in the intake. A broken exhaust rocker can make a nasty pop as well. You keep loading the cylinder, but it can't get out.

The starting line pop, may knock intakes off, taco shell throttle blades, or do nothing, but rarely hurts the motor. The down track boomer generally means it's hurt.

Thanks for sharing! I didn't think about the bog down at launch. This is a good reason to utilize the 1st gear lockout feature on the WinMax controller.

This is true... but your 60’ and ET are much better if you spray out the hole! It’s way more fun too

Does raising the window switch start rpm accomplish the same goal as the first gear lock out but not give up as much performance as first gear lock out?

I've sprayed for years only time I had a nitrous backfire the fuel solenoid was sticking open a little. I could tell something was wrong in staging lanes but ran it anyways.

Well, I didn't get to do any test hits. The PSN-1 install took a lot longer than expected. I still need to swap the BR7EF plugs in too. I'll chip away at it this week and maybe do some test hits next Saturday...

Monte(RIP) summed it up. With you having a stick car, I'd particularly pay attention to what he said about bogging it. If timing makes the intake blow off, it hurt a lot of stuff along the way.

So I did some test hits last night (50 shot). The system is working as it should. The wideband was reading 11.5. I'll jet up to a 100 shot and do a pass on fresh plugs & read plugs next.
