quick ??? about painting a bottle

quick ??? about painting a bottle Is it illegal in NY to remove the labels on the bottle? more accurately, will i get hassled over it at a filling station??? (i imagine according to the letter of the law, it is illegal. i'm looking for more of a real world answer.)
I just got a 10 lb. bottle from a friend and i decided to paint it matching Navy Blue Metallic with some extra spray paint i have lying around. Can i scrape all the stickers off and paint it solid blue or should i just mask them???

I've seen plenty of people with the labels removed. If you do get hassled you can always buy another label, I know NOS sells seperate labels so I'm sure that the other companies must too. Just make sure that you don't fill in the stamped numbers. 
BTW: BottleRocket, that's a sweet looking car and nice bottle to match.

thanks, that was my "daily driver". It got kinda old after a while with a cage, 5 points, manual steering, no radio, no AC, etc. so i sold it and now im finally in my '99 Z28. Luckily this car is also silver so that same paint is in it's future
