I think the issue is the combination of the close maf wires and the fact that you may have a severe voltage drop. I would try one or the other and try to isolate the problem instead of diving into two potential issues at once. I would start with moving the nozzle a bit further away from the wires. Still be sure to point them directly at the wires if at all possible.
i thought about it but i didnt wanna swiss cheese my lid. I dont think it is a voltage drop because i checked the flow with the lines off the nozzel and both stages flowed fine. What makes me worry is that it worked fine for a month of so then began to sputter. 
I had my HSW 70 degree nozzle about that close to the MAF and it always ran lean. I actually tried about 4 different orientations/positions trying to get it to work without any luck. In total dumb luck I decided to try a NOS 45 degree "fan" nozzle (the one that looks like a wedge has been taken out of it) and it solved my lean problem. Worth a shot for about $15.
Oh and if you do try this make sure to get NOS jets the HSW jets don't seat nicley with the NOS nozzle.

I think your just a little to close. Likely your just spraying past the MAF at times and/or partially hitting the maf at times (air dynamics can really play play a roll when this close) and thus the sputtering (you said sputtering went away when nozzles face foward). Standard working distance on both sides is 3 to 4 inches. You really need to isolate and diagnos one stage at a time. Your info comes in waves and seems to have additional onfo each time? Diagnosing n2o problems on the web can be very frustrating to both sides. Run your stage that is farthest from the MAF (just taht stage) and report back. Also, run the other stage by itself and report back.
