Methonal is never needed, there are simply more benefits to using it over race gas in a standalone system. In a water/methonal mixture you can obtain octane levels that race gas cannot reach. Methonal doesnt not have an actual octane rating. But when combine with gas it comes in around 113 octane. Most would think adding water reduces an octane level, when in fact it will increase it. Octane is a messure of a chemical resistance to ignition. Water is not flamable and cannot ignite, so obviously adding water to that mixture will increase its resistance to ignite. This results in you having to pull significantly less timing. additionally a methonal/water mixture will have a chemical cooling effect on cynlinder temperatures which dramatically decreases your chances of detonation.
As i said, a methonal standalone is never "needed" over race gas, but it provides a significant amount of benefits over using race gas. Point in fact, you will make more horsepower safely using meth/water over race gas in a standalone system.
