Default Cig lighter

Can I just cut the socket off the cig lighter power supply and use the orange as power to my switch to trigger the relay and the black as ground??

Yes as long as it's a ground we can use one from any where on the car. the ground side is common and that means we can pick up a ground where ever available. A test light is a great addition to any tool box, just hit the pos of the batt and then touch the blk wire and bingo it should light up if a ground, or just hook up to the lighter hot and touch the ground wire and it should light up.

To be honest Robert...you confuse me...with all those fancy terms.

How about a simple yes or no?

Two wires going to the cig lighter...orange and black.... I just cut the socket off and hooked the black to the ground on my switch, and the orange to the 12v on my switch.

Will this work or will my car catch on fire?

Thanks..ha

It should be fine, depending how your system is wired.

If the switch just arms the system, and no real current is passed through it, it will be fine(this is what robert meant by "low current").

If the switch is connected directly to the solenoid(s) it probably isn't the ideal place to hook it up, as they can draw more current than the cig lighter circuit is capable of safely supplying.

Oh ok... it's just the switch that triggers the relay.
