Rear end questions So I'm still working on my El Camino and now I've decided that a new rear end is in order because the stocker is junk, leaks and is a 2.42:1
I picked up a center section for a ford 9 inch the other day but its 28spline. Does anyone here think that would be an issue behind a healthy 6.0L? It has a factory limited slip unit installed already and its completely ready to bolt into a housing.
So my three options are:
1) do nothing to it and run it
2) convert it to 31 spline with a "posi"
3) convert to 31 spline and a full spool.
The car isn't a drag car but I'd like to not have to worry too much if I want to do some spirited driving in the future. I'm going to be buying a nine inch housing and it comes with 31 or 28 spline axles so this is why I'm asking now.

You will not have an issue unless you run sticky tires.
We have twisted 31 spline, and even 33 spline axles, but that was on 1.2 60 foot times.
Spool vs Posi: Matter of opinion. You can run a spool on the street, but it is not fun, specially at low speeds when turning.
Just go with a good posi and enjoy the car.

Is this for the Elky? Is the stock rearend a 7.5" or 8.5" 10 bolt? If it's the 8.5", I'd just add a limited slip diff (if its not already) and new gears/bearings/seals to that rearend. The 8.5" 10 bolts are more than strong enough for what you're doing with it.
I love the Ford 9 for ease of setup etc.. but if you already have a decent rearend, then why change it?

axles 28 spline is fine for what you are doing,now if you start going to the track and have high horsepower and a trans brake, then yes upgrade, but you will be fine if they are in good shape. I have a eaton posi and 3.23 gears for that 7.5 I will sell cheap????
