Default Dual Porter buffer tips??

Santa got me a Dual Porter buffer, what is the polish\pads do I need to use this thing? Plus I can't mess up the paint unless I'm a complete bonehead about it right? I thought that was the advantage to these. I'm going to practice on the Z28 but the problem is I can't really mess that up either cause its black.....

Merry Xmas

I am a novice but because they spin so slow (600 rpm?) as long as you let the weitght of the tool do the work you can't screw up the paint. Steve or Rick or Todd will have to tell you which bonnets to use.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Yeah it is a great machine and you can't make mistake. As far as pads if you goes it's about like getting into the Zanio, Meguiar's, Menzenra debate.

The two pads types that are talked about in the appearance section are Lake County & Sonus. I have been using the Meguiar's pads and have been really pleased. I've used the Sonus pads as well and didn't think they were any better than the Mequiar's pads.

Lake County, Sonus and Mequiar's all have three types of pads.
Mequiar's 1. Red cutting pad
2. Yellow polishng pad
3. Tan finishing pad.
The plan I have for the black vette Ellis is working on. It's black car with alot of swirls and water spots.

1. Clay bar
2. Mequiar's Paint cleaner with red pad
3. Menzerna Intensive polish with red pad
4. Menzerna Final polish with yellow pad
5. Meguiar's was with Tan finishing pad

I do use Zaino, so would I do the steps up to 3 then the Zaino or would I go to 4 and do the zaino? I'm assuming Zaino is more of a "top" coat product. It makes great paint look its best but doesn't do a lot for scratches and swirl marks.

Also there is some kind of etching water spots on the trunk lid. Is wetsanding and then using the polish an option or does the Intensive polish "cut" a little to get to that kind of stuff if you work it long enough?? Sorry for the stupid questions I have never used a buffer before.

Sonus has that set you can buy at Autotopia I may pic that up if it has what I need....

Thanks for the pointers wish you were closer so someone could show me

I use Zanio as well black car and I believe I've got the shine pretty well dialed in but like modding you always think it could be better. When I finish this winters projects those front fenders will have been leaned on alot and Mark and I are just a little more robust than Doug. I plan on using the following steps; 1. Menzerna Intensive polish 2. Menzerna Final polish 3. Zanio as a topper.

1. Autopia is a good vendor they ship very quickly.
2. Water spots I have not tried this but that Vette may need it. Mix equal parts distilled water with White Vinager. Spray it on the spot and wipe off.
3. Autopia web site has some great tutorials they do have one for using the Porter Cable, it is like 22 pages long.
4. Do not mix product with you pads use a seperate pad for each product.
5. When fixing a flaw in the paint start with the least aggressive product. If you don't get it you can always go more aggressive.
6. I've wet sanded one hood. It's not hard but after wet sanding you need to use a rotary with an aggressive compound to get the sanding marks out, then again with the rotary buffer with a polish to get the swirl marks out from the compound. I probably spent 8 hours on the hood, it turned out great the surface felt like a high dollar street rod.
7. Another great thing about the Porter Cable is it does not create a hugh mess like the rotary buffer does. I tape off all the rubber & vinyl trim with the blue painters masking tape. I like the blue tape it does not leave any residue.

Have fun with your new tool
