Default Got My Axles Back!

WOOHOO BABY!

The bads news is how much it cost. ($225) Since my backing plates don't have holes in them, the old bearings had to be cut off, and new ones pressed on. The good news is one of the bearings had spun a little ( I figure when the pinion seal popped on Boyce during the PE last year) so it was replaced before it became a problem. Thankfully the axle was still good (hadn't spun enough to gall the metal) so they just peened the new bearing to hold it in place.

Now all I need is my tax return & an empty stall in the Groo-monster's garage.

Good deal! And that is a good thing they caught that bearing before it trashed the axle... if it had, that would have been even more of that "hidden cost" you were talking about when it comes to modding...

My favorite question...Did you test it out? Probably has to be broken in or something.

Yeah, I feel like I got lucky. Not that I have the money to spare, but if I hadn't stumbled across this by changing the studs, I would have had a major repair bill (or worse) later on. And the to-do list is shrinking. We'll see if I run out of $ before I hit the end.

There is one thing about this I don't understand. Why does Moser or Strange even build a rear end like this without putting in the longer studs? Seems like those should be standard equip....who's gonna buy one of these that DOESN'T intend to go racing with it?

Oh, btw Bill, did you ever find me some decals? Or should I email Moser?

So what exactly is the requirement for the longer studs? Is it a time cutoff or for the bigger rears, or slicks?

I believe it's both. When you run other than street tires at xx ET you need longer studs. (anybody have their rule book) I know they didn't care when I was running low 13s. When I ran hi 12s they satrted asking more questoins. As soon as I went below 12.5 they started to take closer looks at the car. The last time I raced they told me not to come back until I replaced them.

If you're running slicks (bias ply tire), you need longer studs... if you're running radials (M/T radials, Nittos, BFGs, etc) you don't need them.
