Gague Cluster Problems

Gague Cluster Problems I was driving my '99 Camaro SS today and all of a sudden the speedo and tach started going haywire and all the warning lamps went on. It did that for like 5 seconds and then it reset itself and everything was normal, other than the trip odometer reset itself back to zero. I pulled over and check the battery cable, etc. but all seemed normal. I have never seen that happen before in any camaro that I have owned. Anyone know what might be the problem?

This is a problem that generally isn't vehicle specific...A loose ground often causes this, 1 that all the body control modules and Instrument Cluster coorespond to.
We had had this problem on a 03 Cobra; we turned the key over, and the tach and speedo went haywire, along with all of the warning lamps and indicators lighting up. After tracing through a wiring diagram, all of these siganls shared a common ground, which was under the passenger side kick panel. We pulled the molding and carpet back to reveal that the ground was slightly loose. We "wiggle-tested" the suspect ground, and the problem replicated itself.
This might neccessarily be the problem, just food for thought.

check your battery before you dive too far into the electrical system. i had the same thing happen to me when i had my camaro. the positive bolt is just a ch too long on some cars, and punches through the lead of the terminal, letting acid leak out and eat up the cable. i cleaned up my cable and put in a new battery, and never had any more problems out of the car.

Thanks for all the advice. The SS is going into the shop on Monday, though, and not just for that. I ran the engine a bit this AM to circulate some fluids, and low and behold... a nice little river of coolant came out from underneath to car. So, it is going in for a new water pump too. Well, it is getting up there in miles, so it was bound to happen sooner or later.

I wouldn't doubt it. It is at that time in miles that everything is starting to go...

I'm glad I took it in... found a few other things that needed to be fixed. The SS might be out for a while, but we'll see.... all I know it that the nickel and diming is gotta stop sometime...
