Only reason I'm not leaning towards gears is he said he feels it and doesnt really hear it. He doesnt have big power mods so I dont think he chipped a tooth but you never know. I have seen tires have a defective steel belt and cause an issue very similar. It doesnt need to be in the side and be seen to be the culprit either. Will be very interesting to see what it turns out to be.

We need to start a pool... my money is on tires.

I don't/didn't have big mods and my 10 bolt (gears and all) was absolutely demolished last summer.......made all kindsa nasty noises and what not.

Not saying it couldn't be tires or anything else, just that you don't need power to mangle a 10 bolt.

I welded my pinion bearing to the pinion and it didnt thump like that. Vibrated and made a hellacious noise but never thumped. I guess I'm being optimistic about it we all know the 10 bolt is a failure waiting to happen.

When I broke several teeth off the ring gear of the 4.10s I had in my 10 bolt a few years ago, at lower speeds it did a "clunkclunkclunk" sound with the rotation of the tires. But mine was very loud, since it was missing at least 8 teeth (Boyce said he lost count after that)... you might only be missing a tooth or two.

On the other hand, when I broke the spider gears in my Eaton HD posi, it only 'clunked" when I turned the car. It unlocked/locked more violently than my locker ever has... so yeah, you could tell is was screwed.
