Default Valve spring abuse.

Check out the vid labeled "test004.avi"

Download it and watch it. It'll take some time, so right click and select "save as" and save it to your favorite folder. Then go get a beer, coffee, treat the old lady to your usual 5 minutes of pleasure. whatever. Then come back in a while and check it out. Sheds some light into the abuse valve springs encounter.

7K RPM's, .700" lift on an older Nascar truck motor. It's an awesome vid.

I'm kinda surprised how slow they are moving in that video. I would have liked to see a real-time video in addition to the slowed down version. But the harmonics that each of the coils exhibits is pretty freaky. Who-da-thunk they moved like that....

You wouldn't see anything but a blur on the real time video. Hell, a blur is all you would see at an idle for the most part let alone 7,000 RPM's.

doing some quick math in the old noggin, @ 7k that valve is opening and closing ~50 times a second. if my math is correct, and it's probably not.

58 times per second.

7000 rev per min/60 sec = 116.67 / 2 (because the crank rotates 2 times to 1 of the cam) = 58.33

Don't feel bad. I orginally thought 233 because the crank is bigger than the cam, but you have to go off the gearing.

Bitchin, I got 58 too. Suh-Weet.

I got there a bit different though. 7000/2 = 3500 3500\60 = 58.333

And to think, I absolutley hated math in school. Too bad they couldn't use real world scenarios like these.

Check out the bearing on the rocker, it continues to rotate even though the arm is stationary for that miniscule bit of time at @ 7K.

What I found interesting was the way the spring rotates against the retainer as it goes up and down

So can you see the valve bouncing when it shuts? I think I see that....

The retainer's rotating a bit too. That's gotta be a function of the way the spring is wound and helixed like a screw thread.

I can see the valve bouncing a bit at the closing point.

Check out the way the oil is flying off the spring in droplets as it vibrates with harmonics

And the holes in the retainer top for oil to reach the inner springs for cooling.

Lotsa cool stuff going on in that vid.
