Default General 454 question

Hey all,
I pulled my driver side exhaust manifold off of Big Poo.
89 454 TBI
I know GM had no exhaust gaskets on these, mine was ticking, I managed to get all the bolts out except the ones the hold the exhaust to the exhaust manidfold. Two of those broke, no biggie
My question is, I don't want to do this again, what kind of gasket should I used.
Also
The engine is rebuilt for GM. It says 30 over. I wonder how you compute the difference in size.
Later all.

Don't use a gasket. These were designed for metal-to-metal.

So just get it machined? How do I prevent it from leaking again?

I had an 89 suburban with a 454, there was a service bulletin that added a multi layer steel gasket to fix the problem. I put them in mine and never had another leak.

well to find the displacement, all you have to do is multiply. bore x pie (3.14) x stroke x number of cylinders.
now all you have to do is find the stock dimensions and add .030 to the bore.

You can use the new 8.1L truck engine exhaust manifold gaskets, they are like the LS1 steel shim gaskets. Machine the manifold and then use one of the gaskets between it and the block. Or you can use a FelPro exhaust header gasket.

Well I bought a brand new manifold. I may use the 8.1 gasket. That sounds good to me.
I am not sure why GM designed it that way. I guess maybe expansion?
