Default Catch Cans..

I see a couple threads here and there about Catch Cans, and I have seen em mentioned on some of the threads you guys have posted..
I am just wondering, should I get one ? I am not anywhere near as modded as most of you all ( I am too poor ). But someone told me it would help alleviate my 1qt per 3-4k mi oil consumption issue ? Does one brand stand out, or is it just having one is all that matters?
Thanks
Doug~

I'm wondering if it's okay to answer since I'm not in the NW but before someone says wrong forum or do a search; a catch can will not change the 1 quart per 3-4k usage. It is supposed to keep some portion of the oil mist being pushed out the crankcase from going back into the air intake. Burning this oil mist is not a good thing as it leads to carbon building up on the piston tops, heads and valves. Also oil in the air intake can cause detonation (ping) and if in sufficient amount, shorten the life of the O2 sensors and catalytic converters.

An unfiltered catch can cansister does not precipitate oil out of the mist very well. You should get a canister with some sort of filter element.

Right on, thanks for the response. Guess I will obtain a filtered catch can then. Apreciate your taking the time to respond to my question.
Hope you have a great holiday weekend.

if you arent turbocharged or supercharged just buy crankcase filters I dont believe its necessary to buy a catchcan. the reason people use a catchcan is because all the pressure and boost that leaks into the crankcase through the PCV system and causes excess oil to exit the crank into the intake and causes the problems listed by 01z28m6. long story short catchcan is not necessary unless you are forced induction. but if you simply want one I can show you my dual catchcan setup and give you simple ideas on a single catchcan setup. ~Guy
