Default ORR guys, in here!

Hey guys, which ORR event(s) are you going to do this year. Russ and I are discussing doing one of them as a team and it would be cool to pick one that we will see familiar faces at. I have to pick my vacation time for this year in a few days, so I'm looking to make a decision ASAP.

Thanks!
Pat

Default Events

Boyce and I are planning on :

Big Bend, Texas April
Bonniville 100, Wendover Nevada June
Pony Express, Battle Mountian Nevada August
There is a possible July event yet to be announced

We will not be running any of the Silver State events (May and Sept.), due to them deciding that parachutes are no longer allowed, which is totally stupid.

Why would they dis-allow chutes?

Default Because they are stupid

It comes from an incident with a Viper 2 years ago. The guy was in a 1 miles shootout. He was in the high 190's after 4 runs, but had burnt up his brakes. He decided to make on more run feeling he could hit 200 and use his chutes to stop him. Well he ran into a couple of problems. One is that as he crossed the finish line right at 200 he ran out of NOS, so suddenly he lost 250hp. This locked up his rear wheels like down shifting 2 gears. Then pulls his chutes which are 2 large funny car chutes, not 1 smaller pro-stock chute like I have. Here is another of his problems he mounted the pull point on his car at the licence plate level not at lowest frame rail point as on my car. So when his chutes hit it lifted the rear of the car off the ground and got him slightly sideways. This sent him off the road wrecking his Viper, he was fine a few bumps and bruises was all.
So SSCC decided in their wisdom that parachutes had no place in Open Road Racing, I throughly disagree.

If I can get the right week off we're going to aim for the Bonneville 100. I like the 3 day schedule as it gets me home in time for work on Monday.

What about Ellis and Mark? Are they running this year?

The B-100 venue is one of the best ones for beginners to try out because the course is less technical. And getting home on Sunday night is a big plus.

I certainly want to go to another race this year. Not sure which car we'd take. I'd like to try the Pony Express 130, but the 86 mile leg might be a bit much for my car even with an oil cooler. And Ellis' car might get addicted to running single digits & may never see another turn....

Default If the truth be told

The pony express is even less technical. There are only like 7 turns in the first half of the course. Then 15 miles of turns with most being sweepers. You do have Brian's bridge in there which if you let it sneek up on you at over 140mph there is the possibility of air time. Then it straightens out again. It is a fun course. It actually tends to be much warmer at Bonniville. The year Boyce and I made the 200mph club it was 110 in the shade and 140-150 inside the car.

By the way Mark the race car machanic (not Rich since he can't work on race cars anymore) says he has the car running at top form. It dynoed out at 598rwhp in Boise. Hope this means a good FAST season. The turbo car will also have some ORR duties this year. It should be fun.

Touring Division is what I'd be running if I weren't teaming up with Russ. I'm guessing that is probably the most popular division for Rookies like us.

Don,

I want to get my car running before I bring it out for the cage...and get the cage powder coated.....end of Feb look doable for you?

As for which class, GT 2 is the fastest they let rookies run (except for Boyce). And I would suggest taking your car down to PR & doing a lapping day first. That helped me a lot figuring out how my car responded and how fast I could go. It cornered VERY well, but had way too much power for hammering it out of turns. And I knew how to find "my lines" in the turns, which made the instructors at ORR feel MUCH better about me.....

+1 on doing lapping first. I've been lapping for 3 years(this will be my 4th) and I still have a LOT to learn.

First week of March is best. I have a photo shoot of the Deuce on March 2nd so my cage has priority and Chris and I are going to Greece middle of March to see our son get married. Timing will be tight - keep in touch. That's why I was asking Jeffy about his C5.

Understood, I will be in touch. I'd offer to come help but I barely have any time to work on my own POS lately.

Wendover is a great event. Host hotel is nice (nicer than the rest anyways) and is real close to the start/finish line. The road itself is real nice and not very technical at all. Up until you are running in the 160/170 class there is nothing to worry about.
