Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming

World Temperatures according to the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction. Note the steep drop over the last year.

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.

No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

Meteorologist Anthony Watts compiled the results of all the sources. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to erase nearly all the global warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year time. For all sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.

Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.

Let's hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70.

Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news.

Sorry Al Gore, just like a man-bear-pig there is no supporting evidence that global warming exists.

So...we are now entering an Ice Age?? Bunch of scientific morons so arrogant that can not accept the fact they know **** about the Earth's NATURAL climate cycles. All that warming **** was just the usual argument to keep injecting FEAR in the masses....take that Al Gore you POS!!

warming and cooling I think will cycle throughout or orbit around the sun, or impact on the environment is meager at best, compared to the giant pulsing fireball we call our sun.

Mankind will end itself with nuclear war before we pollute the environment or turn the globe into an oven anyway.

In fact it almost looks like it cycles every ten years LOL. Which makes sense considering all the fools imposing their EPA madness in the 70's and then muscle cars finally making a come back starting in the 80's, and now that downward slump in '08 again....

You can't just go around swapping the word "evidence" for "proof." Of course there is evidence.

There is evidence that the there is a climate cycle not that man has effected it.

The one fact about global warming is the planet Earth is slowing down, and it WILL WARM UP as that happens. What affect we humans are having is debatable. But you can't argue we are having an affect. Every species does, however small. (plankton for instance)

Some people don't believe dinosaurs existed, so just because you don't believe it, doesn't mean it isn't true. Given human greed & tribal mentality, we'll blow ourselves up long before glabal warming is proven one way or the other. Until then I'll keep my nice garden & recycle to make up for my race car. It's a lot like going to church....

Name the scientifically significant people that do not believe in global warming. Now name the politicians that do not believe in global warming. Are you saying that politicians are smater than scientists?

Now lets go light the tires up.

I just wanted to take a short moment out of the normal banter in this thread to congratulate you on the most correct use of the word "effected" I've seen so far on this board, even if the sentence itself sucked!

Congratulations!
