Default Advice on prep work (Hood)

So i got a Sunco hood of another member here (thx domestic!) Seeing as my car is Black this hood is getting repainted for sure.

I have not done a "whole" lot of paint/body work just been a helping hand in some of the process. I don't own a good paint gun/high lb comp. so i'm going to take it to get it painted. I know if i prep it beforehand the cost will drop quite a lot considering thats most of the labor.

My question is, what steps should i take in prepping it since its already been painted? And what products/chemicals would u recommend for a solid primed finish?

Thanks!

(pics of the new hood)

Wipe it with wax n grease remover before sanding, sand with 600 on a DA or wet sand it with 500 using a soft block, then use a grey scuff pad n scuff the whole thing, just use a scuff pad for under the hood, till all the shiny is gone, then use wax n grease remover again,if you can take the mesh out do that if not it will prob. Need taped. You don't need to prime unless your fixing damage on it.

So in step by step terms from what you said.

1) Wipe down with Wax/Grease Remover (any brand you recommend?)

2) Sand it down with 600grit on a D/A sander

3) Use Scuff pad on the whole hood or just underside? (brand? 3M?)

4) Again Wax/Grease Remover

5) Tape off

And thats it?

My personal preference is to sand down a little farther than just scuffing. I would take 220 on a DA. Then seal and prime and then wetsand before I do any paint. You never can be sure how the first paint job was done or with how good of quality the materials used were. I have been burned in the past by just scuffing and shooting someone else's paint work and six months later their paint is peeling, therefore so is mine. Just my .02, but I have been painting for quite a while now and its better to take care of things now than having to possibly re-do it in a year.

Yeah I might go ahead and do that to play it safe. Don't wanna deal with painting it again a year down the road

Sounds right I would also get 320 also if your going to prime,u can sand with 220 prime then block it with 320 then 500 wet or 600 on a DA,domestic is a manager at a body shop I believe ask him about what was done to the hood before,I would bet u don't need to prime it

Little update, been doing research on a few products/ect before i get started. Went out to O'rileys and bought a 1.7L Can of Body Filler.

Anyone have any experience with Evercoat - Quantum?

Didn't wanna go with regular old Bondo so i choose this (about 3x the price) Also going to order most of the stuff on need on eastwood (block set/paper/ect) and needing to figure out a good primer for the hood. If anyone has a recommendations please let me know

The filler u got is good stuff but it mixes a little different then most fillers there's a chart you might find it on the web somewhere,if you mix it right u shouldn't have pin holes,as for primer u might want to ask what the shop your taking it to uses because they will know what goes with there products the best.

Will do, i'm actually thinking of just doing the sanding and taking to get it primed - bring it home, wetsand and let it set it, then haul it back up to have it painted. Sound like a good idea? Because i don't own a paint gun and i'm not going to use some shitty rattle can primer.
