Default Door molding removal issue

Alright I already tried the search function and I am getting back a lot of nothing.
Here is my issue I tried removing the door molding on my 98 Formula the passenger side went great and was a breeze to do. However when I started on the driver side I quickly ran into issues.

While pulling the driver side off I noticed that parts of paint were sticking to the molding. The paint pieces were roughly the size of a quarter. Where the paint once was on the door is now a nice missing piece of door. I am assuming this is fiberglass and wont be an easy fix. So I just put the molding back on the best I could so that I wouldn't have small pieces of door missing and looking awful.

Two questions has anyone ever witnessed the door coming off in pieces like that when trying to demold?

Any ideas on a DIY repair? I am thinking this might be more of a body shop fix which really sucks if thats the case.

your in northern ny , i hope you had a heated garage and used a heat gun to warm everything up . If not thats why this probably happened . Can you post some pics of it , but more than likely the door will have to be painted to take care of it .

I tried this a while back when it was still warm out. Well warm enough for short sleeves. The passenger side went great no issues at all, almost to easy actually. I started the driver side shortly after as in minutes so no difference in temp change.

I am starting to wonder if the strip had be removed before and was put in with a stronger adhesive where the paint stayed with the molding.

I will get some pictures of it this after noon. The molding is currently back on the car but I might as well pull the "band aid" off and fix the dang door.

That is the only spot on the car that did this when removing the door molding. Kind of odd.

Well it looks like I am SOL with this door. Just gonna cover it for the time being with the paint repair kits from the auto parts store and wait until the entire car gets repainted to address repair or replacement of the door.
